Lt. Gen. Dr. O P Mathew AVSM, SM conferred Param Vishisht Seva Medal on 26 JAN 2010 by President of India

Lt. Gen. Dr. O P Mathew AVSM, SM is an alumnus St. Peters High school and St. Peters College Kolencherry.He later graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College Pune (1970) .He did his MD Medicine (1978) and DM Cardiology (1988) from Pune University. He has served as a Consultant in Medicine and Cardiology in all the premier Armed Forces Hospitals. He was Professor and Head of Dept. of Cardiology at Armed Forces Medical College Pune where he guided number of DM students. He has been a guest speaker in CMEs and has published number of papers in national and international journals. He was an examiner in DM cardiology in Pune University and examiner coordinator, National Board of Examinations in Cardiology from 2006 to 2009. He had served as the past Secretary and President of Pune Branch of Cardiological Society of India (CSI) and also as an executive member of CSI. He held the post of the Director Principal and head of the Dept of cardiology of the premier Armed Forces post graduate institute, Army Hospital (Research and Referral), Delhi from 2005 to 2009. Besides being a keen interventional cardiologist, he actively promoted the country's most successful nonliving organ donation programme resulting in several liver, kidney, heart valves and heart transplants at Army Hospital.

He was also the chairman of the board of physicians to the President of India from 2008 to 2009 and was also appointed as the Honorary Surgeon to the President in Jan 2009. He is also the receipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2007) and Sena Medal (2004) for distinguished and meritorious service rendered to the Armed Forces from the President of India. He is also elected as a Fellow of the Cardiological Society of India in 2009.

He retired from the Army in the rank of a Lt.General on 31 July 09.He was conferred President of India’s Param Vishisht Seva Medal on 26 JAN 2010. Currently he is a consultant in cardiology at Lakshmi hospital in Perumbavoor.
